The following dates have been booked for workshops in Sway Village Hall. To avoid disappointment, please book promptly as workshops fill up fast. You may telephone me (01590 683972) or email me (jane.puckering@virgin.net) first to establish if places are available.

Sun March 25th
Inhabited Interiors

Decide on the aim of your picture. If what interests you is the still life aspect of the interior painting, then a figure could be an intrusion. It could be the remains of activity in a kitchen perhaps. But all interiors, even historic buildings, are or have been settings for human life and activity. What’s the story of your interior? The inclusion of one or more human figures, or perhaps your animals, can be an excellent way of making a positive and specific statement in your painting. The interior could be a sitting room, the kitchen, your garden shed or even a stable! Make some sketches. Look for horizontal & vertical lines as well as shapes. Photograph areas of interest and activity.
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit any media, including collage.

Sun April 22nd
Bridges & Water

This subject could be quaint Dorset stone bridges, footbridges in the New Forest, or huge structures across the Rivers Thames and Severn for instance. The type, colour and activity on the water will depend on the type of bridge you choose to focus on.
Paint in acrylics and/or pastels. Bring your usual material.

Sun May 20th
Hedgerows – Countryside in the Spring

Hedgerows are at their best at this time of year, with an abundance of flower, leaf and colour. Cornish hedgerows positively sparkle in the sun. Take photos and make sketches from them. Try to remember what excited you when you took the photograph.
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit any media, including collage.

Mon June 11th
Jubilee Celebrations

This year we have an extra bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Will you be taking part in events or concerts in London or around the country? Will you take the opportunity to get together with friends and family? Maybe you will attend a street party? Whatever you decide to do this subject is about people, crowds, flags and colour, fun and laughter. Capture the spirit of the weekend and put your happy memories down on paper (or mountboard, MDF, canvas!).
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit any media, including collage.

Fri June 15th
Allotments

Some of you may have tackled this subject before. But it can be interesting to revisit the subject. Sketch and photograph your local (or maybe your own) allotment. Your painting may include figures at work. Take note of what has been created to scare the birds. Are they CDs catching the light, or upturned squash bottles on stakes? Either way these can be as interesting as the straight lines of assorted fruit and vegetables.
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit watercolour, acrylics, mixed media, and pastels. You decide.

Mon Sept 24th
Images of the Olympics 2012

Were you lucky enough to secure tickets? Whether or not you did, this workshop is a chance to capture some memorable images of that time in the UK. It might be that you stood on the roadside somewhere in the UK to see the torch being carried. Perhaps you sat on the cliff for a distant view over Weymouth Bay. Maybe you went to one of the big screens to watch your favourite event, or were present in a stadium, or perhaps you stayed in the comfort of your own home. The starting point for your painting could even be an image you saw on TV, or in the newspaper, or on YouTube. I anticipate that your painting will include figures and/or crowds, the sense of movement and extremely interesting shapes. Along with the colours of the events, this could mean vibrant and exciting paintings. Capture a moment in history.
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit any media, including collage (newspaper cuttings?).

Fri September 28th
Portrait/Self Portrait

Following January’s ‘Portrait Workshop’, there was a request for another session. This time part of the morning will be spent doing charcoal drawings of each other, to ‘get your eye in’. This will be followed by the self portrait part of the workshop. We will look at art history and contemporary work. You may work from life (bring your own mirror), or from photographs of yourself. Think about how you would like to portray your self image. Ask close friends and family with what they associate you, the image they have of you.
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit any media, including collage.

Sun Nov 4th
The Journey

Have you ever photographed a car journey (as a passenger!)? It can produce some unexpected images – some blurred. The journey could be an everyday one or part of a holiday, by any means of transport. During the morning use these photographs to paint a series of 4”sq or 6”x4” watercolour paintings. In the afternoon choose one to paint in a larger size in any medium.

Sat Nov 10th
Ancient & Modern – History in the Landscape

During my time in Orkney in October 2011, I noticed that my view of a stone-age site included wind turbines on distant hills. Somehow it seemed perfectly right. Man was making his mark on the landscape. The other thing that struck me as hugely significant were the power lines that appear to march across the contours of this landscape full of ancient history. In Cornwall you can be travelling along a dual carriageway when suddenly you see wind turbines, with perhaps old mining engines houses nearby. Ancient and modern go hand in hand, perhaps more so in other parts of the world.
Decide on your ancient and modern them and how you can combine the two into your painting.
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit any media, including collage.

Sat Nov 17th
Still Life

Together, we will look at composition, the use of still life in art history as well as in contemporary work. You will work in small groups so that you can be close to the subject, which will be well lit. It will be a simple still life, but will require the portraying of transparent and non-transparent objects.
Aim to work square and no larger than 12”x12”. Bring your usual painting materials which could be acrylics, pastels, mixed media or water-soluble oils.

Sun Nov 25th
Approaching Winter

The days are noticeably shorter, and the nights are lit with shop displays, and possibly even Christmas lights. Outside the trees still have some leaves, but other branches are bare. Naked trees allow a different view. In the forest there may still be the remains of fruit on some trees. The bracken in the sunlight glows, even the winter heather has a rich colour in the sun. Around the coast, boats are drawn up onto dry land. The car park at Keyhaven becomes a boat park. With a low sun the day has a different quality. Try and capture these positive images of winter approaching – I am surely not the only person who loves this time of year?
Bring your usual painting material. This would suit any media.

SWAY MANOR ART DAYS 2012

To book, and for prices, contact Sway Manor Hotel on 01590 682754. These art days start at 9.30am with morning coffee and homemade biscuits, followed by tuition and painting. There is a two course lunch, then further painting and a critique. The day finishes at 4pm after a cream tea.

16 JANUARY
Solent Shores in Winter

Paint in the medium of your choice any view of The Solent, either looking out to sea, or inland from the sea. The winter light will play a major part in the mood of your painting. Jane will demonstrate and show examples of her work. Work in the medium of your choice.

12 MARCH
Industrial settings

There is beauty, history and drama to be found in factories, shipyards, and docklands. Think about light and semi-abstract shapes in this environment. Use watercolour, acrylics and mixed media to create the textures, colours, design and shapes of this subject.

14 MAY
Fields, Barrows and Standing Stones

Look for evidence of man on our landscape. Whether it is the old small field systems and stone walls; or tracks and scars across large fields from man and machinery; or barrows, standing stones or stone circles left isolated amongst cultivated land. Examples can be found locally in Dorset and Wiltshire, or further away in France, Cornwall and Orkney. Jane will demonstrate and show examples of her work. Work from sketches or photographs in the medium of your choice.

25 & 26 JUNE
Looking Down

This gives an unusual view-point on your subject matter. Mostly we look across at a subject. By looking down you may notice interesting shapes, patterns and forms that you may previously have missed. Looking down from a height, such as a cliff, can produce an exciting new perspective. Jane will help you with your composition. Use the medium of your choice.

6 AUGUST
Olympic Celebrations

Whether or not you have attended The Games, or you will have been moved by the achievements of the athletes at all the venues around London and in Weymouth. Jane will demonstrate some alternative ways to capture the atmosphere of the subject.

17 SEPTEMBER
Puddles, Rivers & Ditches

Tramp around the forest, or a favourite place, at this time of year and you will find plenty of material. See how, even on a dull day, the water reflects light. Photograph and sketch from your photographs, before producing a painting of the forest in its winter livery, using acrylics or soft pastels (or both!). Bring your usual materials with you. Jane will show you ways to develop your ideas.

5 NOVEMBER
Harbours

Large, or small, these harbours are all around our coast. They are a tribute to the engineers and men who built them and a haven for vessels. Your painting could be about the shapes involved, about the boats, or the bystanders. Jane will take you through various stages using charcoal, acrylics, pastels or mixed media.
